Definition of Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is an alloy primarily composed of iron, chromium, and often nickel along with other elements. The main characteristic that distinguishes stainless steel from other types of steel is its excellent resistance to corrosion and oxidation.
Main Composition
- Iron (Fe): The base element of stainless steel
- Chromium (Cr): Typically between 10.5% and 30%. Chromium reacts with oxygen to form a protective chromium oxide layer on the surface, preventing corrosion
- Nickel (Ni): Added to enhance corrosion resistance and provide structural stability at high temperatures
- Other elements: Manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), titanium (Ti), and nitrogen (N) are often added to improve specific properties of stainless steel
Types of Stainless Steel
1.Austenitic Stainless Steel
Stainless steel with high Cr–Ni content, highly corrosion-resistant, non-magnetic, and easy to fabricate. Commonly used for food-grade applications, chemical industries, and general equipment.
Grades: SA 304, SA 316
2.Ferritic Stainless Steel
Contains high chromium without nickel, magnetic, more economical, and has good heat resistance. Used for automotive, household appliances, and decorative applications.
Grade: SF 003
3.Martensitic Stainless Steel
A type of stainless steel that can be hardened (heat treatment) for high strength and hardness. Suitable for knives, tools, shafts, and mechanical components.
Grades: SM 410, SM 420, SM 431
4.Duplex Stainless Steel
A combination of austenitic + ferritic structures, offering high strength and excellent chloride corrosion resistance. Widely used in oil & gas and marine industries.
Grades: SD 2304, SD 2205, SD 2507
5.Heat Resistant Stainless Steel
Designed to withstand high temperatures, oxidation, and creep. Suitable for furnace parts, exhaust systems, and extreme-heat applications.
Grades: SH 253, SH 310
6.Super Austenitic Stainless Steel
Premium austenitic type with very high Ni, Cr, and Mo content for maximum corrosion resistance, including pitting and aggressive environments. Used in heavy chemical and offshore industries.
Grades: SS 904, SS 254, SS 926, SS 266
7.Nickel Base
Nickel-based alloys with exceptional corrosion and heat resistance, used in extreme environments such as high temperature, high pressure, and highly aggressive chemical media.
Grades: SN 825, SN 625, SN 002, SN 276
